A rock quarry operation on the Upper Guadalupe River is threatening the future of the river, endangering the lives of Kerr County residents, polluting the air, soil and water, reducing property values and the quality of life in Center Point and turning the area into a virtual moonscape devoid of the historical, natural scenery of the beautiful Upper Guadalupe River. URBAN PADDLE TRIP THIS WEEKEND This Saturday, June 28th, Steve Crowe and Thomas Taylor will lead an Urban Paddle Trip down the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Meet at the State Park bridge where FM 428 crosses the Elm Fork (on FM 428 half way between Aubrey and Denton) at 9 am. It's a big, red, iron bridge with picnic tables and little traffic nearby. Boats will be shuttled to the Ray Roberts Dam for put in. If you are late and we've gone, you can drive up to the dam and start down. We will take you back for your car afterwards. There is a $5/person state parking fee at the bridge, or cars can be parked on the street. We will leisurely paddle 3.7 miles (about 1 ½ hours with a stop) down this shaded section, stopping at the old black iron horse and buggy bridge near Pilot Point to get out and cool off. Legend has it that a ghost lives here, as there were hangings from the bridge! The upper part of the paddle has clear water with a rocky gravel bottom where we're likely to see spotted gar or small bass. When quiet, one may see deer or wild turkey. Arriving back at the State Park, we will have lunch before it gets too hot. Bring a lunch and/or snack to share, as well as a chair, sunscreen, bug repellent, etc. Looking forward to seeing you on this first Urban Paddle of '08. Join DDRC Today! Dues are just $20.00 per year (due in January or pro-rated for new members $20 to 6/30 $10 after 7/1) which includes a monthly newsletter of current trips, reports and events. You can join by completing the application for membership.
WE WANT YOUR HELP! These pages are a free riversport information resource. These are your pages. We need your input here on the bulletin board to keep these pages current and to let others know what is happening on (and to) our rivers in the Southwest. Please share your experiences, your trip reports, new web links, river conditions, etc. If you find any dead or changed links, let us know. What trips are happening? What paddling clinics are planned? Got a boat or some gear for sale? This is the place to let others know about it. The City of Dallas is trying to force the building of two needless reservoirs in East Texas that threaten to drown the Sulphur River and the Upper Neches River forest land before the US Fish and Wildlife Service can get it designated as a National Wildlife Refuge. Read the article and then contact City Hall to express your displeasure and objections!
Additional information about environmental matters locally and nationally can be found on the "Environment" section of this web site, which includes links to activist groups that can keep you informed about problems and put you in contact with the appropriate city, state and federal leaders who have oversight into these matters. A couple of critical Texas environmental issues are brewing, and your personal involvement is needed to help set the direction for where future environmental efforts lead us. Details are on the Environmental page and a subpage at the Current Texas Issues link. For problems, suggestions or other matters relating to this web site, its function or contents please e-mail the webmaster.
